Hounds' Mitchell earns first-team All-America

Cornerback one of three ENMU players recognized

PORTALES — Eastern New Mexico junior cornerback Rodney Mitchell has been selected to the first-team defense of the NCAA Division II Don Hansen 2009 Football Gazette All-America team.

Mitchell, from Sarasota, Fla., was one of three Lone Star Conference first-team selections. He tied for seventh in Divison II last season with seven interceptions, good enough to lead the LSC, and also led the league with 23 pass breakups while compiling 72 tackles.

Sophomore quarterback J.J. Harp was a third-team selection for ENMU, while junior linebacker Nathan Uland made the honorable mention list.

Harp, from Argyle, Texas, was recently dismissed from the program for violating university policy. He set school records with 4,367 total yards and 4,373 passing yards last season, setting numerous school and Division II records along the way.

Uland, from Denton, Texas, led the LSC and was fourth in Division II with an average of 12 tackles per game. He had 18 1/2 tackles for loss, three sacks, two forced fumbles and two blocked kicks, and reached double figures in six of the Hounds’ 11 games.
