Cavegirls cruise past Lady Cats

By Dave Wagner
Sports writer
Carlsbad softball coach Bobby Howard was a bit concerned about his squad on Friday. The Cavegirls had just a 3-1 lead after four innings in the first game of a District 4-6A-opening softball doubleheader against Clovis High at Lady Wildcat Field.
“I thought we were just kind of falling asleep,” Howard said. “I said, ‘You’d better wake up or they’re going to sneak up and beat you.’”
Message received. The Cavegirls erupted for nine runs in the top of the fifth, including a three-run homer by junior Rylan Gonsalez, and finished off a 12-1 victory over the Lady Wildcats.
Carlsbad also won the second game 12-2, both ending in five innings on the 10-run rule.
Sophomore Teddi Garcia earned the win in both games, pitching a two-hitter in the opener and allowing an unearned run in the first inning of the nightcap before leaving after the second. Freshman Mireya Serrano and junior Marce Sapien finished it out for the Cavegirls (12-4, 2-0).
Carlsbad pounded out 26 hits in the two games.
“Our pitching was better than it has been,” Howard said. “The bats stayed hot — we haven’t had many cold days. We’ve done a great job of hitting all year.”
The Lady Cats (6-10, 0-2) managed eight hits in the second contest, but stranded seven runners, including five in scoring position and three at third base.
Meantime, the defense struggled at times.
“We can’t give them extra outs,” Lady Cats coach Freddy Perez said. “They’re always a tough team.”
Down 3-0, the Lady Cats scored an unearned run in the fourth inning of the opener when A.J. Wright reached on an error, took second on an infield out and scored on Savana Nelson’s double.
Garcia allowed no walks with four strikeouts in the game.
Eighth-grader Gabby Aragon went 3-for-3 with a pair of triples for the Cavegirls in the nightcap, while leadoff hitter Shelby Welch also collected three hits. Carlsbad scored four in the first and added four in the fourth.
The big innings were simply too much to overcome.
“It was kind of how it was when we played Aztec (in an earlier tournament at Farmington),” Perez said. “They’re very similar teams.”
Wright and junior Mariah Chavez were both 2-for-3 for Clovis.
The Lady Cats play their next three twin bills on the road, all in district play, beginning on Tuesday at Hobbs.
