Abilene Christian sweeps Hounds
Comments 0 | Recommend 0ABILENE, Texas — Catcher Jordan Schmitt’s two-run homer capped a three-run third and Abilene Christian made it stand up for a 3-1 victory over Eastern New Mexico University on Saturday and a sweep of their Lone Star Conference baseball doubleheader.
The Wildcats (24-11, 20-5 LSC) got two homers and seven RBIs from left fielder Mike Elkerson in rolling to a 17-4 first-game win. The teams complete the four-game series with a 1 p.m. (MST) contest today.
ENMU junior right-hander Ismael Solis pitched a six-inning, six-hit complete game in the seven-inning nightcap, allowing only one hit after the third. He walked none and struck out three.
Abilene Christian’s Troy Watten went five innings for the win, and Chris Wiman finished for his second save of the season.
The Greyhounds (16-17, 9-14), who fell under .500 for the first time this season, scored immediately on a single by Clayton Young and a triple by Kevin Thompson. Watten then got Tyler Hayes to hit a comebacker, and Thompson was thrown out by first baseman Allen Smith trying to score on the play — one of five double plays turned by the Wildcats in the twin bill.
ENMU also struck first in the opener, getting Freddy Carmona’s leadoff homer and Jeremy Johnson’s two-out RBI double for a 2-0 lead in the second. But the Wildcats responded with six in the bottom half off Evan Orsak (3-4), capped by a three-run homer from Elkerson.
Elkerson went 4-for-5 in the game, adding a two-run double in the fourth, a leadoff homer in the sixth and an RBI single in the seventh. Watten went 4-for-4 as the DH while right fielder Thomas Bumpass finished 4-for-5 with three runs scored and two RBIs.
Ben Maynard (5-2) earned the win despite giving up 10 hits and four runs in 5 1/3 innings. Relievers Aaron Grinstain and Matt Sullivan allowed only one hit over the final 3 2/3 innings.
First baseman Seth Clabaugh led the Hounds’ attack in the loss, going 3-for-4. ENMU catcher Paden Vendrely extended his hitting streak to 10 games with a run-scoring single in the fifth.
