Trek for Trash event draws record volunteers

Trek for Trash went off without a hitch Saturday as a record 505 volunteers were assigned to ten different locations to take out the trash in Clovis.

“It was a great day, an incredible amount of people,” said Rob Carter, Parks and Recreation director and coordinator for Keep Clovis Beautiful. “We’ve never had that many people in the seven years Parks and Recreation has done this program.”

Carter said final figures on the amount of trash collected and taken to the landfill weren’t immediately available.

Carter said 240 of the volunteer workers were from Cannon Air Force Base . The rest included county and city residents as well as city employees — all spending the day working to clean up neighborhoods.

Carter said more than 2,000 trash bags were filled and carried off to the Clovis landfill.

The groups met at the Parks and Recreation Department, 1500 Sycamore, and were assigned to different sections of the city.

“They cleaned up almost all major roads,” Carter said.

Carter said people were calling him on his cell phone to tell him how impressed they were to see the youth of the county and city showing up to volunteer in the annual cleanup.

City commissioner Len Vohs said results of how much trash was collected will be available on Monday.
