Arrest warrant issued for Texico man

An arrest warrant has been obtained for a Texico man suspected of shooting at his wife Friday during a dispute at 838 Luther St. in Texico, according to Curry County Undersheriff Wesley Waller.

Javier Zapata, 19, is being sought on charges of assault against a family member with intent to commit a violent felony, shooting at a motor vehicle and five counts of child abuse, Waller said.

Around 9 p.m. the woman called police from a business where she went after she escaped the shooting uninjured, Waller said. Five children were home at the time of the alleged shooting, he said.

Texico police, the sheriff’s department, New Mexico State Police and Clovis’ SWAT team searched outlying areas but were unable to locate Zapata, Waller said.
