NextEra Energy Resources, located near Fort Sumner, was recognized Friday as the state’s eighth company to achieve Zia Star Voluntary Protection Program status, according to a news release from the New Mexico Environment Department.

The program recognizes companies with exemplary health and safety management systems that maintain injury and illness rates below the national average for their industry, the release said.

NextEra owns and operates a wind power generator northeast of Fort Sumner. The facility was the first wind power generation facility built in New Mexico and is the first in the industry to receive the Zia Star honor.
