Two Clovis High School students were selected to participate in the Golden Apple Institute Program.
Ana Olivas and Rosa Rosas were selected out of 80 interviewees for the program. The program prepares future teachers. The institute will be held in Albuquerque at the University of New Mexico from June 1-July 11.
Olivas and Rosas will participate in summer institutes every summer as they progress through college to prepare them to become teachers, according to a press release from Clovis Municipal Schools.

Team lands third place in cooking competition
Clovis High School’s ProStart team placed third among 11 other school teams in the New Mexico ProStart competition.
The team consisted of seniors Kelci Morris and Zach Gerson and juniors Amanda Sandoval and Jonathan Gonzalez, according to a press release from Clovis Municipal Schools. The three-part competition consisted of a 30-minute knife skills evaluation, 30 minute set-up period, and 60 minutes to prepare, cook, garnish and present a three-course meal for a panel of executive chef judges.

Scholar position offered to former Clovis student
Adam Quintero was offered a position as an Amgen Scholar this summer at the University of Washington, according to the university’s special programs coordinator and adviser.
Quintero will be working under UW professor Stan Fields in genome sciences and medicine.
The scholarship program enables students to explore connections between their undergraduate major areas of study and biotechnology and related fields.
Quintero attended public school in Clovis and Fort Sumner in 2006 and is currently a junior and pre-med student at the University of New Mexico.
Club to award eight scholarships Thursday
The Cannon Spouse’s Club will award eight scholarships Thursday at a scholarship banquet, according to Erin Rowe, scholarship committee chairperson.
The scholarships range from $800-1,100. The funds for the scholarships are raised by the club’s fundraisers and sales in its thrift shop on Cannon Air Force Base. To qualify for a scholarship from the club, one must be a spouse or a dependent child of someone stationed at Cannon, have a 3.0 GPA and a letter of recommendation. The also club will award ten $50 stipends for books.
The eight scholarship recipients are Daisy Alegre-Cruz, Isaac Edwards, Michelle Cherry, Elizabeth Cherry, Antje Desilets, Rebecca Solares, Christopher Boyce and Christina Stafford.
