Clovis man sentenced 15 years for aiding escapees

A Clovis man has been sentenced to 15 years in prison for driving two jail escapees, hiding in the trunk of his car, to Texas.

Abundio Valdez, 34, pleaded guilty to two counts of harboring or aiding a felon and two counts of assisting in an escape, according to a press release from the district attorney’s office.

After authorities captured escapee Louis Chavez on Dec. 8, they learned Chavez and convicted child-killer Edward Salas received a ride in the trunk of Valdez’ car Aug. 24, when they and six other inmates escaped from the Curry County Adult Detention Center.

According to the release, investigators learned Valdez drove the pair to Friona, taking back roads to avoid roadblocks set up by police searching for the escapees.

Seven of the eight escapees have been recaptured. Salas remains at large.

Valdez and Velma Valdez, who is related to Salas through marriage, were indicted Dec. 19.

Velma Valdez, 45, is awaiting trial.

Following his release from prison, Abundio Valdez will be required to serve four and a half years probation.
