County: No Constitution resolution despite what you read

The Curry County Commission will be discussing numerous issues Tuesday morning in Texico, including the Trek for Trash, juvenile detainee housing agreements and service contract renewals.

What they won’t be discussing — despite previous advertisements to the contrary — is a resolution supporting the Constitution.

“ Nobody’s contacted me about it,” Commission Chairman Frank Blackburn said Monday.

The meeting is set for 9 a.m. at the Texico Fire Department. Blackburn said the commission decided in January to hold one meeting in each of the county’s cities.

The commission has already held meetings in Melrose and Grady, and will have a meeting in the fourth quarter at the Curry County Special Events Center.

A sign near Prince and Manana streets had advertised the resolution at the upcoming commission meeting. The High Plains Patriots, which organized April’s Tea Party protest, was responsible for the message.

But the group’s president, Penny Bailey, said she requested the sign be taken down over the weekend, after the group learned the meeting would be out of town.

“We just thought we’ll wait and present it when they’re back in Clovis,” Bailey said.

The resolution was introduced in the Sept. 10 Clovis City Commission meeting. It requested the commission support the Constitution, with emphasis on the first and second amendments.

It passed on a 6-2 vote. Robert Sandoval, who serves on both the city and county commission, voted against the resolution and has since called it partisan politics.

Items on Tuesday’s agenda include:

• Roadwork items, including chip seal for the Texico Fire Department and purchase caliche for unfinished portions of the county events center parking lot.

• Contract renewals with Empire Paper Company (janitorial supplies), Stephens Construction and Ready Mix, Inc. (hauling road materials), Paul’s Welding Service and Doerr and Knudson (legal services).

• Approval of an agreement with Chavez County Housing for juvenile detainees.

• Discussion and approval of a salary range for the vacant county detention center administrator position.
