Clovis man accused of receiving stolen property

A Clovis man was arrested Wednesday at Oasis State Park, accused of receiving stolen property.

Dustin Nelson, 31, of Clovis was taken into custody by Roosevelt County Sheriff’s Office deputies after he admitted to stealing items from the Portales Wal-Mart.

Deputies were investigating a report Nelson tried soliciting marijuana from an off-duty Portales Police Officer at the park.

Sheriff Darren Hooker said the officer was at the park with his family when Nelson walked up and asked if he had dope to sell.

“The officer said ‘I don’t have any, have a nice day,’” Hooker said. “That’s when he called and we got the information and went down there.”

Nelson, who was camping with his father, left the park for Portales but returned later and deputies questioned him.

Police said Nelson denied the attempt to purchase marijuana. But deputies noticed a bicycle and camping equipment in the truck with store tags from Wal-Mart attached to them.

“He was going into Wal-Mart and filling up the grocery cart,” Hooker said. “He was taking advantage of the greeter, just by walking pass the greeter who was on duty at the time.”

Hooker said Nelson has been  arrested in Clovis for shoplifting from Wal-Mart before.

The value of the items he took was in excess of $1,100, according to the press release.

Nelson is charged with receiving stolen property, a fourth degree felony. He was being held at Roosevelt County Detention Center in lieu of $5,000 bond.

“He also violated his conditions of release from being charged in Clovis,” Hooker said. “The other potential charge could be burglary because he was criminal trespass(ing) at Wal-Mart.”
