Assistant city clerk promoted

The city of Clovis has handed Claire Burroughes new responsibilities and a new job title.

As of Tuesday, Burroughes has been the city’s legislative and community development director.

The position, appointed by City Manager Joe Thomas, requires Burroughes continue duties as assistant city clerk, and take on other duties including:

• Serving as the city’s public information/relations officer

• Acting as a liason between the city and agencies including Clovis MainStreet, the Clovis/Curry County Chamber of Commerce and local growth management organizations involved with Cannon Air Force Base’s mission change.

• Lobbying the state Legislature and helping prepare the legislative agenda for the city.

• Oversee the Community Development Block Grant process, work with the city’s Planning and Zoning Commission, the Department of Building Safety, Clovis MainStreet and others to plan the future development of the city.

“She’s got a lot of duties, but she can definitely handle them,” Clovis Mayor Gayla Brumfield said. Brumfield said there was a need to create a position to help Thomas, particularly looking ahead to a heavier population thanks to a new mission for Cannon.

“It was getting more difficult to have a presence attending all of the meetings,” Thomas said. “We felt representation was very important.”

Following the promotion of Burroughes, Thomas said there was no immediate need for an assistant city manager.

Under terms of her new position, Burroughes’ new annual salary is $62,691.20. It is a 5 percent increase from her previous salary of $59,596.

“It continues to be my pleasure to serve the citizens of Clovis,” Burroughes said. “I enjoy the working relationship with the many people the city comes in contact with, both at a local and a state level.”
