Campos announced bid for lieutenant governor

New Mexico State Rep. Jose Campos II announced a bid for the Democratic nomination for lieutenant governor Tuesday during a ceremony at the Rudolfo Anaya/Ultima monument in Santa Rosa.

Campos, 48, also mayor of Santa Rosa, has served as state representative for District 63 for more than five years.

District 63 includes Curry and Roosevelt counties.

Curry County Manager Lance Pyle said he has received numerous calls regarding the possibility of running for Campos’ legislative seat.

But Pyle, a Democrat who also serves as mayor of Melrose, said he has not made a decision.

“At this time, I have not made a decision on that. I want to complete my term as mayor of Melrose and complete the projects and tasks that I have started,” Pyle said.

“I am honored by the calls that I have received from people asking me if I am going to run and encouraging me. But right now I just want to focus on the projects I have started.”

Pyle’s employment contract with the county requires him to notify the commission and seek approval should he seek public office.
