• Manny Varela (biology) and John Montgomery (anthropology and applied archaeology) attended the 10th Anniversary Event of the Department of Health and Human Services-Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities Professions Capacity Building Program Event on Oct. 31 in Florida.
• Don Criss of KENW-TV will perform as George Washington in a Chataqua Performance at 2 p.m. Saturday at James Elementary School.
In memoriam
• Professor Ronald Shirey, director of choirs at ENMU from 1970-1975, died in Fort Worth, Texas, Nov. 1. He was 76.
Faculty recital rescheduled
Jeanie Ornellas' ENMU faculty recital, originally scheduled for Nov. 19, has been canceled. A new date is to be announced.
Sponsorship sign up begins
People can sponsor a child for the annual Hanging of the Greens Christmas celebration for local children’s homes.
Sign up is 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Wednesday through Friday in the Campus Union Building lobby. Sponsorship is a commitment to buy the child a $20 to $25 gift for Christmas.
Heritage celebration set
Non-traditional Students is sponsoring “A History of Irish and Scottish Heritage” 1-2 p.m. Wednesday in the CUB Ballroom. The event includes Scott Beach exhibiting his musical ability with small pipes, great pipes, guitar and singing.
Heritage month continues
The Office of Native American Affairs has more Native American Heritage Month events scheduled in the coming week.
• Tuesday: Corn on the Cob Eating Contest at noon in the CUB cafeteria.
• Wednesday: Jim West, member of the Cheyenne and Arapaho tribes, is to discuss the historical context of American Indian history and cultures at 2 p.m. in the CUB Sandia Room.
West is the president and chief executive officer of Futures for Children, which works to enhance the educational experience of American Indian students on reservations.
• Thursday: A book signing and luncheon with author Janet Chapman is scheduled for noon in the CUB Sandia Room. Those interested should RSVP before Thursday.
Chapman has written a book about her relative Kenneth Milton Chapman, who was influential in studies of American Indian arts.
• Friday: Navajo tacos are on sale for $6 and frybread is $3. A Navajo taco consists of beans, meat, lettuce, tomatoes and cheese.
Proceeds go toward scholarships. RSVP today.
• Monday: People can take a quiz about American Indians 11:30 a.m. to noon in the CUB lobby. Prizes awarded.
