Storm activity produces damage

Officials for Parmer and Bailey counties said residences and vehicles sustained hail damage Tuesday evening from severe thunderstorms that made their way through the area.

Bailey County and Muleshoe Emergency Management Coordinator Terral King said golf ball- to baseball-sized hail and strong winds were reported in the Muleshoe area.

King said the tornado sirens in Muleshoe were activated around 8:30 p.m. (CDT) as a precaution for a severe hail storm making its way through the area.

He said no injuries were reported.

An official at the Parmer County Sheriff’s Office said there were no injuries reported but homes and vehicles sustained damage from the wind and hail.

A tornado warning siren sounded about 8:50 p.m. (CDT) in Farwell after a storm spotter reported seeing rotation in the clouds above the community.

Parmer County Sheriff’s Deputy Wayne Gruben said an all clear signal for Parmer County was activated 9:25 p.m. (CDT) when the majority of the storm passed the area.

Garry Skwira, a meteorologist for the National Weather Service in Lubbock, said the first of two strong storms started to develop in the Friona area around 7 p.m. (CDT) and lasted about a half hour. A second storm started around 9 p.m. and moved south of the area bringing golf ball- to softball-sized hail for an hour.

Skwira said there were reports of wall clouds and funnel clouds but no confirmed reports that a tornado developed in the area.
