ROSWELL — Matt Lanier scattered four hits and struck out 11 in a complete game effort, and the Clovis boys baseball team claimed the consolation bracket of the Southwest Classic with a 5-0 win over Belen Saturday afternoon.
Joe Shelley went 1-for-2 with a double and a run driven in for Clovis (4-3).
The Wildcats did commit four errors on the day, but coach Shane Leatherwood said a trio of double plays helped Lanier hold off any threat.
“They played well,” Leatherwood said. “We had a few errors, and I think the whole key was Matt got right back into the game. He went for contact instead of trying to strike everybody out. He got the ground balls, and we turned double plays when we had the opportunity.”
Leatherwood said the Wildcats were patient at the plate, and the team pushed out five runs combined in the fourth and fifth innings to break it open.
“We just weren’t going to chase bad pitches, whether they were called strikes or not,” Leatherwood said. “Eventually, they just quit calling (strikes).”
The Wildcats will have plenty of time to rest, as they are idle until opening the Rio Rancho Tournament March 28 against La Cueva.
