The Clovis Community College Board of Trustees has a new member — Donald Sharer.

Sharer defeated incumbent Gayla Brumfield in a 236-217 vote Tuesday night in the only contested race.

Charles Guthals garnered 55 votes running unopposed in District 4.

Sharer said he was a little surprised at his victory.

“I know she (Brumfield) is very popular in the community,” said Sharer, 44, a science teacher at Portales High School. “I was out there knocking on doors and getting people to know who I am and asking for their support.”

Sharer said when starting his new position, he plans to first get to know fellow board members and ask CCC President Becky Rowley about her concerns.

Sharer believes his experience as a high school teacher will help him in his new position.

“The whole education field is changing,” Sharer said. “The needs of community colleges and universities are evolving. I’m part of it. I can help understand the needs of students transitioning from high school to college and help make informed decisions.”

Brumfield served on the CCC Board of Trustees for more than 10 years. She said she will not run for a board position in the future.

“I have a lot of passion for CCC,” said Brumfield, a CCC graduate.“I dedicated a lot of my life to the college. I’ve really enjoyed the college and want to congratulate it for what it has done.”

Brumfield will remain in her position for the rest of the month.
