Students going to state competition
Twenty-five Clovis High School and Freshman Academy students were chosen by audition for the 2010 New Mexico All State Band and Orchestra.
The students will travel to Albuquerque in January to participate in the New Mexico music Educators All State Conference.

VFW essay winners announced
Veterans of Foreign Wars post 3015 and their Ladies Auxiliary announced the winners of the Patriot’s Pen and Voice of Democracy essay contests and teacher of year contest.
The Patriot’s Pen essay contest theme was “When is the right time to honor our military heroes?”
First place and $100 went to Holly Albright of Clovis Christian School, second and $75 went to Tamera Anderson of Clovis Christian and third and $50 went to Halle Reid of Clovis Christian.
The Voice of Democracy essay contest theme was “Does America still have heroes?”
First place and $100 went to Carlie Alford of Faith Triumphant Christian School of Portales.
Ronnie Mackechnie of Grady High School won teacher of the year and $100.
Schools win maintenance award
Clovis and Texico school districts received state awards for maintenance, according to a news release from the Public Schools Facilities Authority.
Texico and Clovis were awarded the silver level award.
Harvey Brady of Clovis received an individual 2009 Ben Lujan Maintenance Achievement Award.
The award is named in honor of Speaker of the House Ben Lujan for his support to New Mexico schools and presented annually by the New Mexico Public School Facilities Authority.
