Rams sweep Robertson

The Portales Rams evened their season record at 5-5 Tuesday with a pair of wins at home against Las Vegas Robertson.

In the first game the Rams took a six-inning 11-1 decision and then came back to wallop the Cardinals 16-4 in 4 1/2 innings in the nightcap.

“Our bats are starting to come around,” Ram coach Arturo Ontiveros said. “That’s the biggest thing right now for us. Our pitchers did well and kept them out of it.”

The Rams recorded 10 hits in the first game then went back to the bats in a big way in the second game for 17 hits.

Senior Thomas Sullivan hit two-run homers in each game but it was junior Brandon Adkins who got things started in the first game.

After Bryce Chambers recorded the Rams’ first score of the day in the second on a fielder’s choice, Adkins came to bat with the bases loaded. His grand slam put Portales up 5-0 and set the tone for the rest of the day.

The Rams got one more run in the third, followed by 3 in the fourth and 2 in the sixth.

Ram starter Ricky Lovato went the distance for the Rams in the opening game and held Robertson scoreless until the top of the sixth.

In the second game Adkins started on the mound and was relieved by Pablo Urioste.

Offensively Portales put up 6 runs in the first three innings, while holding the Cards to just 3 over their first four at-bats. The fourth inning proved to be the crushing blow. With Sullivan’s two-run shot, the Rams had 10 runs on seven hits in the fourth to go up 16-3.

“We pretty much just put some hits together in that inning,” Ontiveros said.

Robertson managed a single run in the fifth before Urioste shut the Cardinals down.

Elida 27, Logan 0

LOGAN — The varsity Elida Tigers beat the first-year Logan Longhorn baseball team 27-0 Tuesday. Then the Tiger junior varsity got a 15-3 win in the second game of the day.

According to Elida coach Jimmy Ward it’s uncertain whether or not the games will count, however. A mixup in scheduling left the two teams without umpires for the games. Coaches served as umpires so that the teams would at least get a workout from the trip.

Elida’s varsity is 1-1 if the game is counted. It hosts Portales JV Friday following the dedication of the new Acosta Field in Elida.
