Difference: Leading 11-8 with less than three minutes left, senior LB Cameron Simmons intercepted a Panthers pass and returned it 19 yards to the Jal 16. Senior RB-CB Michael Mares scored his second TD on second-and-9, and then added his second 2-point conversion run of the contest.
Difference-makers: Mares rushed for 105 yards, and also had a pair of interceptions.
Of note: There was no scoring from the first play of the second quarter — when Jal pulled to 11-8 on a touchdown and 2-point conversion — until the final TD with 2:35 left. … Fort Sumner ran the ball 44 times, with seven players splitting up the carries.

Muleshoe 46, Floydada 14

Difference: Sophomore RB Isaac Baca scored five touchdowns for the Mules, including four in the first half on the first five times he touched the ball. Muleshoe opened a 40-0 lead before the Whirlwinds scored twice in the final eight minutes.

Of note: The Coyotes had just seven players in uniform and lost two of them, junior QB-LB Michael Puebla (shoulder) and junior C-S Ish Machado (knee) to first-half injuries. The game was called midway through the second period. … Senior RB-LB Mark Butler (knee) sat out after getting hurt last week, but coach Pablo Pena hopes to have him back for a 4 p.m. game next Saturday at House. … Hondo came in ranked No. 3 in 6-man.

Of note: The Tigers led 40-6 at halftime, and the game was called near the middle of the third period on 6-man’s 45-point lead rule after halftime.

Difference-makers: Senior QB Devin Montoya scored on a 16-yard run with 4:27 left to lift the Red Devils to victory. … Freshman Samuel Garcia’s 21-yard run early in the second quarter put Springer in front, the the Bronchos grabbed an 8-6 advantage on J’Kobie Lee’s 22-yard TD run and Hunter Terry’s 2PAT run midway through the third period.
Of note: Floyd collected one first down after Montoya’s go-ahead score, but Broncos coach Rafael Roybal said a holding penalty then set the Broncos back and they were unable to mount a threat.
