Portales man killed in Roosevelt County rollover

(Roosevelt County, NM) - On Sunday, June 28, 2009 at approximately 7:00 p.m., Officer Ramon Borjas with the New Mexico State Police investigated a one vehicle accident that resulted in the death of Jose M. Mendoza (39 of Portales).

The investigation revealed that his nephew, Alejandro Mendoza (16 of Portales) was driving a 2002 Chevrolet Cavalier north on Roosevelt Road W, approximately ½ mile south of Roosevelt Road 7 (approximately 3 ½ miles southwest of Portales). Jose Mendoza was the passenger.

While travelling north, the driver lost control of the vehicle and overcorrected causing the vehicle to rotate into a broadside skid. While rotating, the vehicle rolled ½ time somewhat end over end and came to rest on its top.

Unfortunately, Mr. Jose Mendoza perished and was pronounced at the scene. Alcohol was not a factor and seatbelts were used. Alejandro Mendoza received minor injuries and was released from the hospital Sunday evening.
