Dec. 19 Clovis girls capsule

Clovis (5-1) at Lovington (7-0)

2:30 p.m.

Radio: KCLV 99.1 FM

Last game: Clovis has been idle since defeating Manzano 41-35 in the title game of the Mel Otero Invitational in Rio Rancho. Lovington won 62-51 Tuesday at Tahoka, Texas.

No slouches: Clovis coach Jeff Reed is expecting a tight match despite the difference in classifications. The 3A Wildcats won the City of Champions Tournament in Artesia, cruising past Carlsbad 62-44 in the title game, and have victories over Class 4A Silver and Class 5A Los Lunas.

“They’re not afraid of the big schools,” Reed said. “They’ll be ready.”

What to expect: Speed versus height. Lovington has good size for a 3A team with centers Allisyn Morgan and Cori Haley, and Reed said junior guard Kenzie Black will punish you if you leave her open.

“They have some good shooters,” Reed said. They’ll probably mix it up on defense. I’m expecting a zone. I think our “quickness will get to them, so they’ll try to slow it down with the zone.”

Lovington players to watch: Reed said Lovington has a good group of seniors with guards Natasha Nash, Laura Mendoza and Morghan Young.
