Court warns of jury duty scam

Staff report

A Ninth Judicial District Court official is warning about a telephone scam in the area.

Court Executive Officer Louis Moore said Tuesday that an individual claiming to be a court employee is calling the public, telling them they have failed to report for jury duty and a warrant has been issued for their arrest.

The false threat is used to coerce individuals into providing confidential financial information, Moore said.

“These calls are not from real court officials,” Moore said. “The Ninth Judicial District Court of New Mexico does not require anyone to provide any sensitive information or financial information in a telephone call.”

Moore said most contact between the court and a prospective juror is through the mail. Anyone receiving such a telephone call should report the incident to local law enforcement, he said.
