Nearly 2,000 left in the dark

What Xcel called a system malfunction at a substation Saturday caused a brief power outage for 1,821 customers in east Clovis.

According to Xcel media relations representative Wes Reeves, the power went off at 5:14 p.m. and was restored at 5:41 p.m.

Reeves said a lightning arrestor, a device which protects the substation from lightning by diverting energy from sensitive equipment, came loose and contacted an energized portion of the station, causing the outage.

All service was restored in Clovis, according to Reeves.
