CARLSBAD — Clovis High’s boys were about to send Carlsbad to its first home loss of the season Tuesday night.

Then the Cavemen suddenly warmed up.

After managing only 14 points through the first two periods, the Cavemen got themselves back into the game with a 25-point third quarter and pulled away late for a 55-50 District 4-5A victory, putting the Wildcats (12-11, 0-2 district) in a precarious spot in the district race.

Junior guard Trevin Ramirez and 6-foot-5 senior forward Josh Miller combined for 19 second-half points as the Cavemen (16-7, 1-1) overcame a nine-point halftime deficit and improved to 10-0 this season at home.

“We knew it’d be a close game,” Clovis coach Matt King said. “I’m proud of the effort the kids gave, although I’m disappointed with the outcome.”

Ramirez and junior forward Shakur Smith finished with 14 points each for the Cavemen while Miller ended up with 10 after a one-point outing in the opening half.

“Our backs are against the wall in the district,” said King, whose team steps outside district play to host Class 4A No. 1 Roswell High on Friday night at The Rock. “We’ll just have to keep fighting.”

Only senior guard Willie McCray reached double figures for the Cats, scoring 12 points. Clovis had four more field goals than the Cavemen (21-17), but went 7-for-11 from the foul line to 18-of-25 for Carlsbad.

The Cavemen pulled into a 39-39 tie after three quarters and managed to hold off the Cats down the stretch.

“I thought we did some good things,” King said. “We gave ourselves a chance to win.”
