A bird was the cause for a power outage on Wednesday afternoon that left more than 2,000 customers in the Clovis area without power for approximately 40 minutes, according to an Xcel Energy spokesman.
Areas impacted by the outage were Clovis, Texico and Farwell. Power was disrupted at 12:25 p.m. and was restored at 1:05 p.m., according to Wes Reeves of Xcel Energy.
Reeves said a bird contacted energized equipment in a Curry County substation, and the protective systems in place interrupted the power flow.
In all, 2,183 Xcel customers were impacted.
The bird did not survive the encounter with the energized equipment.
“Usually that happens,” said Reeves.
All customers should have their power back, according to Reeves.
