Fort Sumner council — Q&A

George Sena

Q Why are you seeking this office and what do you hope to accomplish?

A I feel my 20-plus years of experience as a business owner in the private sector and more than a decade of experience managing a natural gas company in the public sector give me a unique view as a village councilor. I ran for office because I have this experience to offer our community. I believe my experience can help the Fort Sumner community to continue to offer the services and quality of life that has made it a great place for me and my family. As councilors, we must work within our budget, but also make the best use of that budget to help our community grow.

Q What are the most pressing issues facing Fort Sumner and how do you intend to address them if elected?

A The Village of Fort Sumner is working to provide a new facility for our Senior Citizens Center. We need a larger and more useful facility to accommodate a growing senior population. We need a site that is more enjoyable for our seniors and provides the space for the activities they enjoy. I also support the continued improvement and maintenance of our community’s infrastructure, taking advantage of grants, partnerships with the state of New Mexico and through strong relationships with our legislators.

Q What is your position on the trash issue facing voters in Fort Sumner?

A I have had generally good comments in response to the new trash collection service we have implemented in partnership with De Baca County. It will take time to accurately identify and address problems that arise in an undertaking of this size. This was an ongoing problem in our community due to the state-mandated closure of our landfill and I believe the steps we have taken are prudent in facing this problem, rather than passing it on to future community leaders. This is a community issue, not a city or county issue. With that view, we can continue to work together to make the handling of waste work for everyone.

Q Why are you seeking this office and what do you hope to accomplish?

A I am seeking office to continue working with the other councilmen on two main projects that have started now that my four-year term is over. Also, to try to bring in more jobs to Fort Sumner to keep our youth from leaving and seeking employment elsewhere and, overall, to work with the citizens of Fort Sumner to continue making our community a safe place to live.

Q What are the most pressing issues facing Fort Sumner and how do you intend to address them if elected?

A The city has some issues with the sewer system line that is 50 to 60 years old and approximately 3,000 feet of sewer line that needs replacing, which is very important due to the line being a main transmission line. The councilman needs to work together on getting funds for this. Another issue is the trash service. This is another new project we just started and has some adjustments to be worked on.

Q What is your position on the trash issue facing voters in Fort Sumner?

A My position on the trash issue is that I know that there are some concerns that need to be looked into and if the citizens of Fort Sumner will vote me back in I will work on these concerns closely with the other councilmen.

Q Why are you seeking this office and what do you hope to accomplish?

A Because I tried it several times before and I think if I get in there I can make some kind of a difference.

Q What are the most pressing issues facing Fort Sumner and how do you intend to address them if elected?

A Lack of communication with the public. We need to listen to them. They can come up with ideas and provide input. Just talk to the public and (city) workers and see what needs to be done.

Q What is your position on the trash issue facing voters in Fort Sumner?

A Myself, I don’t like what they’re doing there with the water meters and trash. They put it with the water. In other words, if you don’t pay your trash bill they will cut off your water. We need to work on that and fix it.
