Portales clobbers Goddard on the road

ROSWELL — Portales girls coach Wade Fraze thought his team struggled a bit early on, yet the Lady Rams led Roswell Goddard 16-8 at the quarter on Friday night.

No problems for PHS, which got a career-best 20 points from sophomore guard Sheraya Cox and rolled to a 62-28 win over the outmanned Lady Rockets.

Fraze said his team committed seven turnovers in the opening stanza. Obviously, it didn’t slow the Lady Rams down a lot.

“We started off pretty poor,” Fraze said, referring to the mechanical errors. “They (Lady Rockets) came out and played hard. We just didn’t handle the ball real well.”

The second quarter, though, erased any lingering doubt. Portales, ranked No. 1 in Class 3A, outscored Goddard 19-5 to open a 22-point halftime lead.

While Cox was the only PHS player in double figures, nine others contributed to the scoring column. Senior Savannah Vincent finished with seven points and a team-high nine rebounds while senior guard Kacie Terry had her best outing since returning in early January from a summertime knee injury, hitting a pair of 3-pointers en route to eight points and collecting four assists.

“Kacie Terry did a tremendous job; she just played a really good game,” Fraze said. “(Sophomore) Amanda Schmidt came off the bench and played the best she’s played on the varsity.”

Senior guard Francis Armijo had a team-leading five assists while Cox and sophomore forward Kambrey Blakey, who scored nine points, each collected three steals.

For Goddard, which hosts Class 5A No. 1 Clovis at 2:30 p.m. today, 6-foot junior post Baylee Robinson was the lone double-figure scorer with 10 points.
