CANYON, Texas — Even at less than full strength, Eastern New Mexico University’s men were too much on Saturday for former Lone Star Conference rival Southwestern Oklahoma.
Senior guard Devone Davis scored 19 points, grabbed seven rebounds and added seven assists at the Greyhounds — coming off two tough losses in the previous four days — cruised to a 71-49 win over the Bulldogs in West Texas A&M’s Thanksgiving Classic.
Senior guard Rafael Love added 18 points, while senior forward Phil Henry just missed a double-double with 11 points and nine rebounds.
“We played really well, basically for the first time all year, especially defensively,” ENMU coach Andrew Helton said. “It was really good to see.””
The Hounds (3-3) limited the Bulldogs (4-2) to 30 percent shooting (12-of-40), including 3-of-17 from 3-point range, and a season low in points.
Senior guard Rodney Blackmon sat out the contest with an injury sustained early in Friday’s 86-84 loss to Pittsburg State. Blackmon played through it and finished with 24 points in that game, but was unable to go against the Bulldogs, who saw a four-game winning streak come to an end after beating host WT 73-67 on Friday.
ENMU coach Andrew Helton did not disclose the nature of the injury, but said he is hopeful Blackmon can return for Saturday’s 5 p.m. tipoff against Northern New Mexico at Greyhound Arena. That game will be sandwiched around three high school boys games — beginning with Roswell High against Belen at 1 p.m., with Portales playing Wingate at 3 p.m. and Clovis taking on Mayfield at 7 p.m.
The Hounds were also without senior forward Cornelius Cammock on Saturday as he sat out the second of a two-game suspension.
Southwestern led 5-1 and 7-5 early, but the Hounds went on a 15-0 run to take control of the game. Davis hit a 3-pointer to start it, and senior guard Rafael Love hit one to finish it for a 20-7 lead with 12 minutes left in the half.
ENMU shot 55 percent (16-of-29) and limited to Bulldogs to 5-of-21 in building a 43-23 halftime lead
Junior forward Gary Inglett led the Mustangs with 19 points, including 15-of-16 from the free throw line.
