PORTALES — Midwestern State senior Emily Saville had a goal and an assist on Sunday as the Mustangs blanked Eastern New Mexico University 2-0 in Lone Star Conference women’s soccer at the ENMU pitch.

The loss was the first in regulation for the Zias (4-6-5, 1-3-4 LSC), who had won their previous four outings ending in regulation while going 0-5-5 in overtime affairs.

Meantime, MSU (11-4-1, 6-2-1) remained in contention for at least a share of the LSC title and a possible No. 1 seed in the first round of the upcoming conference tournament. The Mustangs trail Angelo State (11-3-2, 7-1-1) by a game but can wrest the top seed and host the conference meet by beating ASU by at least two goals in Friday’s matchup at San Angelo, Texas.

Seville got an assist on the first goal of the season for MSU’s Mickey Brown just over 16 minutes into the contest. Seville got her second goal of the season with just under 35 minutes left in the match, driving the ball into the top right corner of the net.

MSU had a 9-3 edge in shots on goal, with Zias junior goalkeeper Fabienne Wilson making seven saves. It marks only the fifth time this season ENMU has allowed an opponent more than one goal.

Senior keeper Kallie Essary made three saves for MSU, earning her seventh shutout of the season and fourth in the last five matches.

The loss also ended a three-match unbeaten streak for the Zias against MSU, including a win and a tie last year and a 1-1 draw earlier this season at Wichita Falls, Texas.

The Zias currently hold fourth place in the LSC, with four of the six teams making the conference tournament scheduled for Nov. 7-9 at the home of the LSC champion. ENMU closes out the regular season with conference matches on Friday at Texas Woman’s and on Sunday at Texas A&M-Commerce.
