Cats draw Cibola in soccer playoffs

ALBUQUERQUE — The Clovis High boys soccer team earned the No. 12 seed on Sunday in the 12-team Class 5A state tournament.

The Wildcats (8-12) clinched the District 4-5A championship and a berth in the state meet with a 2-1 win at home on Saturday over Hobbs, and play at fifth-ceeded Cibol at 4 p.m. on Friday in Albuquerque.

Cibola (14-4) went 4-2 for second place in District 1-5A . The Cats have actually outscored the Cougars 52-49 for the season, but they’ve given up 55 goals to just 19 for Cibola, which has allowed one goal or less 12 times (six shutouts).

The rest of the tourney will be played at the APS soccer complex in Albuquerque. Friday’s winner faces fourth-seeded Volcano Vista (13-5), the 1-5A champion, in an 8:15 p.m. quarterfinal on Nov. 7.
