The former treasurer of the New Mexico Cattle Growers Foundation was indicted by a Curry County Grand Jury on Friday, accused of embezzling $296,000, according to a press release from District Attorney Matt Chandler.
Chandler said Charles W. Fleming, 54, of Clovis, a certified public accountant, faces 20 felony charges of embezzlement. The cash missing from the foundation was reported in February, Chandler said.
Chandler said about 20 checks issued by Fleming were deposited in his personal bank account.
Fleming was originally arrested in July but was the subject of a multi-state manhunt when he failed to appear in Magistrate Court to face charges. He was arrested Aug. 5 in Lubbock by Texas Rangers acting on a tip.
Chandler said Fleming was in Curry County Jail in lieu of $250,000 cash-only bond.
