Independence Day is just around the corner and Clovis is gearing up for the 18th annual Smoke on the Water celebration.
Live music, food vendors and a fireworks display will highlight the event, which will kick off at 2 p.m. on Thursday, July 4 at Green Acres Park.
The annual fireworks show is funded entirely by local businesses and individuals, and according to the Clovis/Curry County Chamber of Commerce, this year’s goal has not yet been met.
Courtney Bailey, events coordinator for the chamber, said donations can be made anytime before the event, but the sooner the better.

Fun and festivities
• For some family fun and exercise, the Smoke on the Water 5K will begin at 8 a.m. on July 4, and the race starts at First Street and Main Street. Event sign-up is available at active.com.
• McDaniel’s Furniture is sponsoring a Couch Potato Contest, and the winner will have the opportunity to sit on the main stage on a new couch. Tickets for the contest are available at McDaniel’s and will also be sold the day of the event. The lucky winner even gets to keep the couch.
• Several local musical acts will be playing throughout the day, including the Clovis Community Choir, Grupo Cielo and Stateline.
• To get even more out of this year’s fireworks experience, EPCOR Water will be handing out 3D glasses for the show. The fireworks display is scheduled to begin at 9 p.m.
