Fishing report - May 29

This fishing report, provided by Bill Dunn and the Department of Game and Fish, has been generated from the best information available from area officers and anglers. Conditions encountered after the report is compiled may differ, as stream, lake and weather conditions alter fish and angler activities.

Northeast

Charette Lakes — We had no reports from anglers this week.

Cimarron River — Water flow below Eagle Nest on Monday was 72 cfs. Trout fishing was good using Panther Martins, elk hair caddis, Cimarron specials, salmon eggs and worms. We had no reports from the Gravel Pit Lakes.

Clayton Lake — Hot spot for trout — Fishing was very good using Power Bait, worms, salmon eggs and homemade dough baits for limits of rainbow trout. We had no reports on other species.

Conchas Lake — Fishing was good trolling Wally Divers, Flicker Shad and Bombers for walleye. Fishing was fair to good using tubes, crank baits, jerk baits, spinner baits, chatterbaits and creature baits for smallmouth bass and white bass. Fishing was good using small jigs and grubs for crappie. Fishing was fair to good using liver and cut bait for catfish. We had no reports on other species. The surface water temp was in the mid 60s.

Coyote Creek — Trout fishing was fair using Power Bait and salmon eggs in the beaver pond areas.

Eagle Nest Lake — The boat ramps are open and the boat docks are in place. Fishing for northern pike was fair using spoons, spinners, jerk baits, crank baits and clousers. Anglers did best working the shallows from boats and from the bank. Fishing was good trolling Panther Martins, Arnies and Platte River specials for a mixed bag of kokanee and rainbow trout. Fishing for perch was fair to good using worms. Anglers using Power Bait and salmon eggs and fishing from the bank caught a few rainbow trout.

Hopewell Lake — Trout fishing was very good again this past week. Anglers did well using Fisher Chick spinners, Panther Martins, Blue Fox spinners, Pistol Petes and salmon eggs for rainbow trout.

Lake Alice — We had no reports from anglers this week

Lake Maloya — Fishing was fair to good using salmon peach and green garlic-scented Power Bait, Pistol Petes, marshmallows and salmon eggs for trout. The annual fishing derby will be May 31-June 2. For more information contact the State Park Office at 575-445-5607.

Los Pinos — Trout fishing was fair using salmon eggs, worms, bead-head hares ears and flashback pheasant tails.

Manzano Lake — Trout fishing was slow to fair using salmon peach Power Bait, garlic cheese, salmon eggs and homemade dough bait.

Monastery Lake — Trout fishing was good using power eggs, salmon eggs, Power Bait and Pistol Petes.

Morphy Lake — Hot spot for trout — Fishing was very good using Power Bait, marshmallows, worms, cheese, corn and salmon eggs.

Pecos River — Water flow near the town of Pecos on Monday was 60 cfs. Trout fishing was good using elk hair caddis, prince nymphs, stimulators, worms, nightcrawlers and salmon eggs.

Red River — Water flow near the hatchery Monday was 80 cfs. Trout fishing was fair using poundmeisters, wooly buggers, spinners and nightcrawlers.

Rio Grande — Fishing was fair using black stone flies, wooly buggers, Panther Martins, wooly buggers and nightcrawlers for trout. We had no reports on other species. Water flow near the Taos Junction Bridge on Monday was 281 cfs and the water was a bit off-color from runoff.

Rio Hondo — Stream flow near Valdez on Monday was 63 cfs. We had no reports from anglers this week.

Rio Mora — Stream flow near Terrero on Monday was 16 cfs. We had no reports from anglers this week.

Rio Pueblo de Taos — Water flow near Taos was28 cfs. Trout fishing was slow to fair using small prince nymphs, wooly buggers and worms.

Santa Barbara — We had no reports from anglers this week.

Springer Lake — Fishing was slow for all species.

Storrie Lake — Fishing was fair using Power Bait, garlic cheese, worms and salmon eggs for trout up to 16 inches. We had no reports on other species.

Ute Lake — Fishing for crappie and bluegill was good using minnows and worms. The bluegill action has just started. Fishing was good trolling crank baits and spinner worm rigs for walleye. Fishing was fair to good trolling crank baits and casting curly tail grubs for white bass. Fishing was good using senkos, tubes, chigger craws, smallie beavers and jigs on rocky points for smallmouth bass. Most of the bass caught were less than 14 inches in length. Fishing was fair to good using jerk baits and spinner baits for largemouth bass. Fishing was fair using cut bait and stink bait for catfish. The surface water temp was in the mid to high 60s.

Southeast

Bataan Lake — We had no reports from anglers this week.

Black River — Stream flow at Malaga on Monday was 2.7 cfs. Trout fishing was slow.

Blue Hole Park Pond — Trout fishing was slow.

Bonito Lake — Closed.

Bosque Redondo — Fishing was slow for all species.

Bottomless Lakes — We had no reports from anglers this week.

Brantley Lake — Anglers are to practice catch-and-release for all fish here as high levels of DDT were found in several fish.

Carlsbad Municipal Lake — We had no reports from anglers this week.

Chaparral Park Lake — Fishing was good using worms, liver and stink bait for catfish. We had no reports on other species.

El Rito Creek — We had no reports from anglers this week.

Greene Acres Lake — Fishing was good using worms, liver, hot dogs, nightcrawlers and homemade dough bait for catfish. We had no reports on other species.

Green Meadow Lake — Fishing was fair to good using nightcrawlers, liver and homemade dough bait for catfish. We had no reports on other species.

Grindstone Reservoir — Trout fishing was good using Power Bait, worms, salmon eggs, Panther Martins, and Pistol Petes. We had no reports on other species.

Jal Lake — Fishing was good using liver and worms for catfish. We had no reports on other species.

Lake Van — Fishing was good using worms, nightcrawlers, dough bait, blood bait and liver for catfish. We had no reports on other species.

Oasis Park Lake — Fishing was very good using blood bait, hot dogs, liver and nightcrawlers for catfish. Fishing was good using worms for green sunfish. We had no reports on other species.

Pecos River — Stream flow below Sumner Lake on Monday was 68 cfs. Fishing was fair using liver and nightcrawlers for catfish. We had no reports on other species.

Perch Lake — Fishing was slow.

Ruidoso River — Stream flow near Hollywood on Monday was .52 cfs. We had no reports from anglers.

Santa Rosa Lake — The lake has reopened to boating but the launch area is undeveloped and boating is restricted to no wake speed only. Fishing was good using crank baits, curly tail grubs, sassy shad and jerk baits for walleye. Fishing was fair using minnows, grubs and worms for crappie. A few smallmouth were caught by anglers using tubes, crank baits and jerk baits. Fishing was fair using chicken liver, nightcrawlers and cut bait for catfish. We had no reports on other species.

Sumner Lake — Fishing was fair using crank baits, jerk baits, grubs, tubes and minnows for a mixed bag of white bass, smallmouth bass, walleye and crappie. Fishing was slow to fair using nightcrawlers and chicken liver for catfish. The Violation Canyon boat ramp remains open at this time and will remain open as long as lake levels permit.
