Press Release: Curry County celebrating government month

Curry County will join county governments across the United States in celebrating National County Government Month this April. This provides Curry County the opportunity to educate the community on the services that County government provides.

Curry County has many activities planned for local students of all ages. This year's theme is "Smart Justice: Creating Safer Communities."

Pre-Kindergarten through third grade students are invited to participate in a county-wide coloring contest, fourth through sixth grade students are encouraged to put their creative skills to the test and create a poster based upon this year's theme and seventh through tenth grade students can write an essay based upon the theme. All coloring sheets and posters will be on display at the Curry County Courthouse the entire month of April and will be judged by the Curry County Elected Officials and Department Heads. Prizes include savings bonds, movie passes and gift certificates.

All high school Juniors and Seniors are encouraged to apply for the fourth annual "County Manager for a Day" program. The selected student will be given the opportunity to shadow Curry County Manager Lance Pyle during a normal business day. Past events have included budget meetings, interviews, luncheons, riding with aSheriff Deputy and tours of County facilities.

"Applying to be County Manager for a day has changed my life in more than one positive way," said Taylor Marez, last year's County Manager for a Day. "I met some very influential and highly esteemed individuals in the County who taught me a great deal about leadership and my ability to have a large effect on a small community."

To be eligible, students will follow a similar procedure that applicants must follow when applying for employment with Curry County by filling out an application form, having references checked and interviewing for the position. Applications are available online from the Curry County website, www.currycounty.org and are required in the Curry County Administration office by March 15, 2013. Students may mail or drop off their applications to 700 N. Main, Suite 10, Clovis, NM 88101.

National County Government month is a great opportunity to educate our future leaders and the community in the services that County government offers," said Lance Pyle, Curry County Manager.

Questions may be addressed to the County Manager's Office at (575) 763-6016.
