The Clovis High School marching band won the New Mexico Grand Champion trophy Saturday at the Zia Marching Band Fiesta in Albuquerque, according to a CMS news release.
The band won trophies for outstanding musical achievement, outstanding visual achievement and placed first in Class 4A in the preliminary competition.
This is the 32nd consecutive year the band has made the state finals and its 12th "New Mexico Grand Champion" award, a Zia Marching Fiesta record.
The band will compete Saturday in the Bands of America Western Regional in Glendora, Calif.
Wildcat Band Director Bill Allred said Saturday's competition in California will be the toughest for the band this season because the band is competing against several regional bands with a strong national reputation. He said the competition's panel of judges is also the strictest of any competition the band performs in this season.
Allred said the band's victories build self-esteem among band members and prepares them for the next competition.
