Accepting Jesus adoption into God’s family

I heard a wonderful true story last week that personifies for each of us the words in Romans 8:15: "The Spirit you received does not make you slaves, so that you live in fear again; rather, the Spirit you received brought about your adoption to sonship. And by him we cry, 'Abba, Father.'"

The young parents were nervous. They climbed out of the car and the dad unhooked the car seat with the sleeping infant inside. Behind the couple came the young man's parents, his sister from out of state, and a host of other friends from their church. Another young mother came with her professional grade camera that her husband had long saved for to give to her as a Christmas gift.

This was a momentous day for the young family. On this day, their sweet five month old baby boy would legally become theirs. This young Christian couple had wanted children for so many years. It had been a long process. Finally they were chosen by a single mother to be the parents of her son. The final hurdle was the official court decision. The group climbed the steps of the courthouse and road the elevator together to the 5th floor.

"Those here for confidential case #21245 may now enter the courtroom," announced the court clerk as the parents and their baby, the grandparents, the friends from church, and the stay-at-home mom/amateur photographer entered the courtroom.

"All rise!" was heard as the judge entered. The young mother cuddled her baby. She had nurtured him from his birth. She had given him his midnight feedings. She had been with him for his first shots and for his bumps and bruises. She loved him with a love she never knew was buried deep within her.

The young father gazed adoringly at his young son. He envisioned T Ball games and fishing trips. The father even felt that he and the baby boy shared some of the same facial features. Neither parent could imagine life without their baby. In their minds, their family was totally complete.

The judge spoke: "We are here today to finalize the adoption of this baby. Parents, please stand and raise your right hand and take the oath," and the procedure was underway. Relevant questions went back and forth from the judge to the parents, and the parents answered from their heart. There was a pause as the judge reviewed the file.

After some minutes, the judge with a broad smile on her face, faced the parents and courtroom visitors and stated, "After careful consideration, I see absolutely no reason that his baby should not be legally adopted by these parents. Congratulations to both of you!"

BOOM! The gavel struck the table with a resounding thud. Applause broke out within the courtroom. The baby was theirs and it was final! No one could take him away.

The thankful couple hugged, cried and embraced their family and friends. The stay-at-home mom/amateur photographer took this as her cue, and she began capturing every possible pose with her camera. Flashes were seen and video cameras were turned on. It was a glorious time! They were a family, bound by love and the commitment of two adoring parents for their son.

The Bible tells us that we who have accepted Jesus are adopted as sons. And then we have the relationship to cry to Him, "Abba, Father." Abba is an Aramaic word which means "daddy" or "papa." We become His child and He becomes our heavenly Father.

With our acceptance of Christ, the gavel of our adoption is sounded. God is the judge and His word is final.

What a marvelous example of the word adoption!
