Clovis High's baseball team slipped into the Class 5A state baseball tournament as the No. 15 seed and will visit No. 2 La Cueva in a three-game, first-round series this weekend.
The Wildcats (10-15) and Bears (21-3) meet in a 4 p.m. single game on Friday with one or, if necessary, two games to be played on Saturday. The winner advances to meet either No. 7 Valley or No. 10 Eldorado in a quarterfinal game on May 10 at either Isotopes Field or La Cueva H.S. in Albuquerque.
The championship game is set for 6:30 p.m. on May 12 at Isotopes Park in Albuquerque.
Also earning state tournament berths, announced on Sunday by the New Mexico Activities Association, were Texico in Class 2A and Melrose in Class 1A.
Texico (13-12) earned the No. 5 seed in 2A and the Wolverines will host No. 12 Estancia (9-12) in a 5 p.m. round-of-16 game on May 10. The winner meets either No. 4 East Mountain or No. 13 Pecos at 2:30 p.m. next Tuesday in a quarterfinal game at Rio Rancho Cleveland H.S.
The championship game is at 1 p.m. on May 11 at Isotopes Park.
Melrose (15-7) was seeded sixth in the eight-team 1A bracket and the Buffaloes travel to No. 3 McCurdy (12-8) for a 2 p.m. clash on Wednesday. The winner moves on to face either second-seeded Floyd or No. 7 Gateway Christian at 2:30 p.m. next Tuesday at Manzano H.S. in Albuquerque.
The 1A championship game is set for 1 p.m. on May 10 at Isotopes Park.
