Clovis man in stable condition after shooting

A 26-year-old Clovis man police say was shot in the chest outside a motel was in serious but stable condition Saturday at a Lubbock Hospital.

Police said Jerry Abeyta was found in the 1300 block of Axtell Street about half an hour after receiving reports of shooting at 4:49 p.m. involving persons in two vehicles outside a motel on Mabry Drive.

Police said Abeyta was the driver of one of the vehicles that sped away from the motel.

The incident is under investigation by the Clovis Police Special Operations Unit.

In a press release, Chief Steve Sanders said there is no clear motive for the incident and suspect are being sought.
