An investigation into undisclosed allegations at the Portales Police Department is expected to conclude by the end of this week, District Attorney Matt Chandler said Tuesday.

The investigation was launched Nov. 30, the same day Deputy Chief Lonnie Berry was placed on paid administrative leave.

Chandler said investigators from his office and New Mexico State Police are still investigating, but declined further comment.

Portales Chief Jeff Gill said Thursday that while he wasn’t sure of the full scope of the prosecutors’ investigation, traffic citations were an area of concentration.

Berry has worked for the department more than three decades, receiving numerous accommodations including the 1994 Governor’s Award for Children Advocacy. He was promoted to captain in 1996 and deputy chief in 2009.

Berry also writes a weekly column for the Portales News-Tribune.
