Clovis man killed in crash on U.S. 70

A Clovis man was killed and his wife and 9-month-old child were taken to Roosevelt General Hospital with serious injuries in a crash on U.S. 70 Friday night.

Police identified the deceased as Coby Greenwalt, 33. His wife Jessica and their child were injured.

The accident happened at 5:29 p.m. about 3 miles east of Portales.

Greenwalt is the brother of former Clovis High and Texas Tech basketball standout Cisti Greenwalt.

State Police Capt. Jimmy Glascock said a 1997 Ford pickup pulling a long, flatbed utility trailer got stuck in the sandy median north of Portales with the trailer extending into the eastbound lane.

The eastbound Greenwalt vehicle, a 2008 Toyota Sport Utility Vehicle driven by Coby Greenwalt, struck the rear of the trailer.

Glascock identified the pickup driver as Brian Johnson, 21, of Portales, who was not seriously injured.

Glascock said no citations were issued Friday night. An accident reconstruction team is conducting an investigation.

Police described injuries to Jessica Greenwalt and the baby as “relatively serious, but non-life threatening.”
