Grassfire burns 60 acres

Freedom New Mexico

Sixty acres of grass, three farm structures and farm equipment were destroyed by fire Wednesday around Curry Roads 21 and D, according to David Kube, Curry County wildland fire coordinator.

Kube said fire units from Texico and Clovis called to the scene about 12:30 p.m. arrived to find a swather, a piece of farm equipment used to cut hay, fully engulfed.

According to Kube, the fire began when the swather caught fire in the engine compartment and spread to the grass and nearby abandoned farm buildings.

The swather was valued at $280,000.

No damage estimate to the structures was available at this time. Eight fire units including two from the Pleasant Hill Fire Department responded.
