Zias end 2011 campaign with loss at Commerce

COMMERCE, Texas — Ezon Onditi and Rachel Robertson had 14 kills apiece and Texas A&M-Commerce held off Eastern New Mexico University 25-19, 23-25, 25-22, 25-22 in the Lone Star Conference and season volleyball finale for both teams on Saturday.

Chelsee Hudson added a career-best 12 kills for the Lions (11-17, 6-14 LSC), while Breanne Snyder had a double-double with 10 kills and 10 digs. The Zias (6-24, 1-19) got a match-high 19 kills from junior outside hitter Amber Durand and had their own double-double with 11 kills and 11 digs by senior middle blocker Kristen Beck.

Junior libero Dallas Russell posted a match-high 26 digs for the Zias, while junior outside hitter Megan Craft had three solo blocks.

Senior middle blocker Jessica King closed out her ENMU career with eight kills, moving her into seventh on the school’s all-time list with 929, six ahead of Stacy Tapper (1988-91).

Commerce led the entire first set except for a 12-12 tie, pulling away with four of the final five points, but the Zias overcame an early 9-2 deficit to get the match even. Trailing 21-17, Durand’s kill sparked a game-ending 8-2 run that pulled ENMU even in the match.

There were 17 ties and nine lead changes in the third set as neither team led by more than three points. With the Zias up 22-21, the Lions ran off the final four points to win the set.

ENMU led 10-6 early in the fourth game, but the Lions roared in front with a 9-1 run. At 24-22, Ondidi put down a kill on match point.
