District Attorney Matt Chandler said Wednesday that he expects to make a decision within the next week on the case of a woman shot Aug. 21 by a Texico police officer.
The investigation was completed and turned over to Chandler on Wednesday, said New Mexico State Police Lt. Matt Broom.
Broom said Lisa Salguero, 31, of Texico was shot by Texico Officer Richard Peterson, who was responding to a report of a burglar at the woman’s home. Broom said when Peterson arrived there was an altercation and Salguero was shot once in the arm.
Salguero’s attorney, Dan Lindsey, maintains there wasn’t any altercation.
“She called police for help and they shot her,” Lindsey said.
Salguero was taken to Plains Regional Medical Center in Clovis for treatment. She is now at home recovering, according to Lindsey.
Peterson was placed on paid leave for five days after the shooting and has since returned to work, according to Texico Police Chief Doug Bowman.
