Zias edge Highlands in exhibition

PORTALES — Paola Loya broke a scoreless tie midway through the second half and Eastern New Mexico University held on for a 1-0 win over New Mexico Highlands in an exhibition game Thursday afternoon at the ENMU soccer field.

A freshman forward from Albuquerque, Loya scored in the 68th minute off a crossing pass from the right side from freshman Alysia Carrasco, also of Albuquerque.

Senior Sierra Cardenas and freshman Kellie Hogan split time in the net for the Zias, combing for eight saves.

Highlands had a 19-12 edge in shots.

Highlands goalkeepers Shannon Delarosbil and Bianca Contreres combined for five saves.

The Zias are back in action Thursday, hosting Colorado School of Mines. The match will begin at 1 p.m.
