Now that you’re eating for two, what goes in your mouth is very important. Here’s what’s off-limits (or partially off-limits) and why.


It goes into baby’s bloodstream and could lead to big problems, from an increased miscarriage risk to issues related to development.

Certain Fish

Stay away from swordfish, king mackerel, tilefish, and shark, which contain high levels of mercury. Any type of raw fish is also a no-no.

Soft, Unpasteurized Cheese

Unpasteurized types, like feta and goat cheese, can contain disease-spreading organisms that put you and baby at risk.

Deli Meat

It could carry listeria, a bacterium that causes serious illness. To play it safe, reheat deli meat to at least 165 degrees before eating.


The jury is out on caffeine, but most OBs recommend limiting intake (no more than one or two caffeinated beverages a day) or cutting it out completely.

Unwashed Produce

Make sure you clean fruits and veggies to rid them of bacteria.
