Senior second baseman Chris Eaton drove in four runs with a career-high five hits and Eastern New Mexico University’s baseball team pounded out a season-best 22 hits Friday night in a 19-9 Lone Star Conference win over Northeastern State at Greyhound Field.
Eaton went 5-for-6 — all singles — and the Hounds (14-28, 9-22 LSC) scored multiple runs in five innings, including a six-run eighth which ended the game on the 10-run rule.
ENMU had 19 hits in three other games this season. The Hounds fell one short of their season scoring high, attained twice in wins over Wayland Baptist.
Junior first baseman Mitch Wolfe went 4-for-5 with two doubles and his team-leading sixth homer of the season. Seven ENMU players had at least two hits.
The teams will complete the series and their seasons today with a 1 p.m. doubleheader.
Junior left-hander Marcus Drake (3-1) labored through five innings for the win, allowing six runs — five earned — on eight hits with three walks and three strikeouts. Junior Joe Jones earned his first save by working the final three innings.
The last-place RiverHawks (6-31, 4-26) had to go deep into their bullpen after ENMU chased started Andrew White (2-5) in the second, building an early 8-0 lead. Northeastern closed to 8-6 with two runs in the top of the fourth, but Brandon Devries hit a two-run double in the bottom half and Wolfe’s leadoff homer off Jake Avery keyed a three-run sixth.
Center fielder Marcus Terry went 2-for-4 for the RiverHawks, including a two-run triple in the third. Northeastern State finished with nine hits.
