Las Cruces Kings (5-3) at Curry County Cats (6-2)
• What: New Mexico Premier League first-round playoff game
• When: 6:30 p.m. Saturday
• Where: Leon Williams Stadium, Clovis
• Of note: The Cats finished second and the Kings third in the Pecos Division of the NMPL. … Curry County hasn’t actually played a home game since Feb. 26, when they beat the Kings 31-13. They played their first two games at Leon Williams Stadium, and won another scheduled home game on a forfeit. … Cats coach Paul Lopez said he isn’t sure who will show up for the Kings, noting that a Las Cruces High-Mayfield alumni game is also scheduled for this weekend. “We’re expecting them all to be here,” he said of the Cats’ approach. “We watched them play against the (Pecos Division champion Albuquerque) Titans, and they lost by 11 points, just like we did.” … In the earlier meeting, Las Cruces led 13-12 at halftime before the Cats shut them out in the second half. Lopez said the Kings got out of their game by going heavily to the pass. “What I’m expecting is for them to run the ball more,” he said. “I think they’re better off running it. If they’d done that against us the last game, they might’ve had a better chance.” … The Cats have been nursing some minor injuries, including “a little bit of a pulled quad” for running back Manual Robles, Lopez said. He thinks they should be at or near full strength for the game. … The team has had several good practices leading up to the game, Lopez said. “The guys know it’s playoff time,” he said. “They know they’ve got to win to keep playing.” … Admission to the game is $5 for ages 13 and over, and free for 12 and under. … The winner takes on the Titans in two weeks, probably on May 14, for the right to advance to the league championship game against the Rio Grande Division champion on May 21.
