PLAINVIEW, Texas — Eastern New Mexico University’s baseball team put up 20 runs in a rout of Wayland Baptist earlier this season at Portales. Evidently, it wasn’t a fluke.
The Greyhounds hit four home runs, two by junior designated hitter Mitch Wolfe, and scored in all but one inning in thumping the Pioneers again on Tuesday 20-9.
The Hounds (10-24) had 19 hits off six WBU pitchers. ENMU could have scored even more, but stranded 12 baserunners.
Wolfe went 4-for-6 with four runs scored and three RBIs. Leadoff man Blake Thomsen went 4-for-7 and No. 2 hitter Alex Schultz was 3-for-6 with a home run, four runs scored and four RBIs.
ENMU jumped on Pioneers starter Ryan Stuck (0-1) for three runs in each of the first two innings. Leading 13-8, the Hounds put up a seven-spot in the top of the ninth.
Junior Joe Jones was in line to pick up his first pitching victory, but was lifted with two out in the fifth after the Pioneers (20-23) scored four runs to close to 9-4. Ryan Pruitt (1-2) pitched the final three innings and was credited with the win.
Third baseman Mike Medina led off the ENMU sixth with his first homer of the season while Wolfe, who now has five home runs, hit a one-out solo shot in the seventh and a leadoff blast in the ninth. Schultz hit a two-run bomb, his second of the year, in the eighth.
The Pioneers finished with 14 hits, including first baseman Kevin Hennessey’s 16th home run of the season, a three-run shot in the sixth. Leadoff man Eddie Allen went 4-for-6 while third baseman Miguel Pagan and center fielder Aldo Mendez each added three hits.
