CANYON, Texas — Washburn scored three runs in each of the final two innings Saturday to deal Eastern New Mexico University’s softball team an 8-7 loss on the second day of the West Texas A&M triangular.
The Zias (3-15) also lost to sixth WT 15-2 as the Lady Buffs first baseman Kim LeComte hit for the cycle and drove in eight runs.
ENMU opened a 7-2 lead against Washburn wit ha six-run fourth, highlighted by a two-run single from second baseman Danielle Mendoza and run-scoring hits by Emily Livingston and Tessa Fioritti.
Zias junior Erin Roufosse carried that margin into the bottom of the sixth when Lady Blues catcher Hilary Weatherford cracked a three-run homer to make it close. Washburn (5-9) then won it in the seventh, with the winning run coming on first baseman Alex Zordel’s one-out, bases-loaded RBI single.
The Zias collected eight hits off two Washburn pitchers, with Fioritti going 2-for-4 from the leadoff position.
WT (17-1) overwhelmed ENMU for the second consecutive day behind LeComte, who had a three-run homer in the first, a two-run triple in the second, an RBI double in the third and a two-run single in the fourth. The game was called on the eight-run rule after 4 1/2 innings.
Marci Womack (8-0) pitched into the fifth for the victory, allowing two hits and striking out four. Fioritti, who finished 2-for-3 in this one, drove in both runs with singles in the third and fifth.
