Relay for Life team Dream Weavers will be rocking Saturday away to raise money.
That’s rocking in a rocking chair.
Team member Chris Pettigrew of Clovis said the rock-a-thon is in honor of Kris Weaver, a Clovis veterinarian who died from cancer in 2010. The team was created in August in her honor.
Pettigrew said the team of about 10 is made up of friends and clients of Weaver.
“She was one of the very best vets I have ever worked with or had my animals with,” Pettigrew said.
The event will include a row of rocking chairs. Rockers either received sponsorships to rock for a period of time or will take donations while rocking.
The event is from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. in the center court of the North Plains Mall.
Pettigrew said the event will also draw attention and therefore raise awareness about cancer.
“I’ve had cancer and I’ve had family members who have had cancer and it’s a really important thing for me,” Pettigrew said.
Pettigrew said they have nine rockers who have pledged to rock in advance, but anyone who wants to rock can come and sit with them.
The Clovis High School jazz band will perform from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m.
Clovis resident and Dream Weavers member Diane Taylor was friends with Weaver, who she described as “unbelievably caring.”
“She was a good friend to everyone she worked with,” Taylor said. “She just had an amazing heart for not only the animals but also the owners who loved them.”
Taylor said the event idea came from a fundraiser another team member had attended while living in Kansas. She said the event is a fitting tribute for Weaver.
“It’s being done by a lot of people who loved her very much,” Taylor said.
Taylor said she also enjoyed that the event is different.
The event will also include a raffle of homemade pet blankets and beds.
